Open-plan island modular kitchen with breakfast bar

Island Kitchen Ideas for Open-Plan Indian Homes

An island kitchen is the centrepiece of many modern open-plan homes — a freestanding counter that adds prep space, storage, casual seating and a real sense of occasion. Here is how to plan one that works beautifully.

Do you have the space?

An island needs clear walkways of roughly 90–100 cm on all sides so people can move and cabinet doors can open. As a rule of thumb, an island suits kitchens that are open to the living or dining area and at least moderately sized. If space is tight, a peninsula (an island attached at one end) gives a similar feel with a smaller footprint.

Give your island a job

The best islands do something specific: a prep zone with a chopping surface, a cooking hub with a hob and chimney, a sink and clean-up station, or a social breakfast bar with stools. Decide its main role first, then design around it.

Build in smart storage

Use the island for deep drawers, a built-in waste unit, wine or bottle storage, and open display shelves on the seating side. It is valuable real estate — do not waste it.

Make it a feature

A contrasting finish or a marble-look counter turns the island into a design statement. Add pendant lighting above for warmth and to define the zone in an open-plan space.

Plan it with experts

Islands involve plumbing, electricals and careful clearances, so good planning matters. Modulo Solution will design an island that fits your home and how you live. Book a free consultation or call +91 76664 60326.
